Updates: Garden and Headboard Project

Hello!

I'd love to take you on a picture tour of what is happening out in the garden.  I think you will find it to be a combination of beauty and tragedy.  Yes, it is that serious over here.  We are currently mourning the loss of one of the decorative gourd vines.  It lived long enough to grow some kind of gourd, but not long enough for us to actually tell what it was going to be.

Look at that wilted vine.  Sad face.

Fun fact about the decorative gourds that are actually continuing to grow... they are different!  The leaves on the plants at this point certainly demonstrate some minor differences in the vines, and we can tell in looking closely at the vines too.  Check out the leaf size on this other, more successful vine!

If you need comparison, there's my hand.  This leaf is, in fact, much larger than my face.

More fun news about this other vine... it's growing a ... melon?  gourd?

There it is!  So sneaky! That's a 4x4 fence post, so he's a big boy already!

Seriously, this is, like, the most secret, hiding fruit of all time.  If he came to life for, I don't know, a children's book or something?  he'd be a big, burly, secret agent ninja.

So, I know it looks a lot like a watermelon, but my money is still on pumpkin.  Mostly because I don't remember eating watermelon last year, and I am determined that these are Halloween reincarnate.  I'm ready to know what your best guess is... Comment me, people!  Send your best guess about what the little dead guy is and what the secret agent ninja fruit is... or will become.

Oh!  I almost forgot to tell you.  There was a little discovery of more compost treat!  See this little stick poking up from the dirt?

Hello, nice to meet you.

Hello, nice to meet you.

I believe that might be an avocado tree!  I hope he gets what he needs there and grows big and strong so that we can transplant him because, boy-oh-boy, I sure do love avocados! (Also, all of the information I just told you about the avocado seedling... from "Oh" to "avocado"... I was channeling Mr. Rogers.  Did it work?)

Here are the last few garden updates.  E just planted beans the other week, and built a little frame to support them as they grow.  Check them out!

Weird but true fact:  This is my favorite part of bean seedling life, when you can still see the seed remnants acting like little leaves.  So cute!

I also planted a blueberry bush, because I've been too excited about the blackberries coming in.  Have to spread the excitement around!

Now, I suppose it's time to wrap up this post with some completed headboard project shots.  It's been about a week, and the thing is still standing, so I think it's going to work!  It's attached to the bed that I built last summer using plans that you can find here.  I had intended to add the headboard last summer, too, but I ran out of time.  In retrospect, I'm glad that I did, because it gave me the chance to really think about the final product.  And soo, viola!

I'm pretty pleased with the final look!  Next step is just to get this room painted...

On a side note, I just wanted to say "thanks" for the blog encouragement.  I care a lot about this stuff, and it's neat when people say things like, "Hey, that's neat," back to me.  So, thanks!

Until next time,

-K
